FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Now that both memberships have voted to proceed, how quickly will members see changes? . . .

SCAA and SCAE will remain two separate organizations until the closing of the Unification, which is not expected to happen before the end of this year. So very little will change for members during that time period. However, there will be a good deal of planning and prep work done by elected leadership and staff during this time which we will continue to share with members along the way. As progress is made, members will be informed; we stay committed to transparency of the work and open communications throughout. As always, member feedback is essential to keep our board and staff informed of your questions and ideas.

Are World of Coffee and Expo still planned for 2017? What about other events? . . .

All events that are scheduled to take place through 2017 will still take place, including Expo, World of Coffee, Roasters Guild and Barista Guild events, and WCE Competitions such as World Barista Championship. Major U.S. 2018-2020 and European 2018-2019 conferences have signed contracts and remain unaffected.

When will the two organizations merge into one? . . .

After signing of the definitive agreement by both organizations and satisfactory completion of due diligence, which is expected to take place late in 2016 or early 2017.

What can volunteer leadership groups expect? . . .

As within SCAA, leadership volunteers are essential as influencers of direction and strategy as well as completing tasks, doing work, and delivering programs to members, and this will continue into the new organization. While committee structures have not yet been determined, we will be utilizing our strategic plan to develop the structure that best allows for the work to continue and to be an open and inclusive community.

I want to be involved in the process – how can I volunteer? . . .

We strongly encourage all members to continue to share their ideas, concerns and questions with us by email at feedback@scaa.org or by calling our office and speaking directly with our staff. Members who want to engage at the volunteer level should contact volunteers@scaa.org to speak with our volunteer manager about how to participate in a committee or council.

I’m a member of both SCAA and SCAE and my membership for either or both expires before January 2017, should I pay my renewal fees? . . .

If this is the case, please notify us by emailing membership@scae.com or membership@scaa.org. In order to remain a SCAE or SCAA member and to continue your current benefits, we strongly suggest that you renew your membership(s).

Are membership dues and other costs going to go up? . . .

Membership dues are not expected to rise as the result of unification. SCAA events and programs are priced based on actual costs and other factors which can vary, so there are never any guarantees that pricing will remain static and can change over time, particularly when the cost of production rises. Our goal with membership has always been, and will continue to be, to deliver value and attract ever-more members.

How will members be informed of progress and changes as they happen? . . .

The existing SCAA unification website, www.scaaunification.org, will continue to be the ‘hub’ of information for members who want to stay informed on progress. Look for updates to the site beginning in the coming weeks. Major milestones will also be communicated to members via email, and some updates may also follow on SCAA Social Media channels.

What will happen to SCAA and SCAE educational programs? . . .

The SCAA and SCAE leadership are committed to streamlining the two education programs into one harmonious and mutually beneficial education program. Our aim is to either improve or maintain value at every step, for every participant. Exact details are being worked on by collaborative teams of SCAA and SCAE leaders including volunteer leaders and staff. It is extremely important to hear from our Campuses, Specialized Instructors, and ASTs at this time, to help us to make informed decisions and to keep your benefit and value at the centerpiece of the new program. Please contact feedback@scaa.org with any specific questions or to be connected with a member of the SCAA Professional Development staff to discuss or get involved.

What will happen to World Coffee Events and their events? . . .

World Coffee Events (WCE) was originally a joint venture of the two associations, SCAA and SCAE, to deliver feature events to the members and global coffee communities. For now, WCE will continue to manage their portfolio of events, while integrating into the events center of the new organization. The entire portfolio of all events between the organizations will be reviewed so that we can continue to deliver events that are meaningful to multiple member categories and also add value to new audiences.
